Depending upon your office space or budgetary restrictions, a full-size fax machine may not be practical. Or perhaps you prefer to keep all your business communications linked within your central computer.
Whatever the reason, some companies and home office workers rely on fax software to receive transmissions directly to their PC. The advantage of such a system is that it makes document management much easier, and eliminates one step in the movement of data between people and machines.
The downside, though, is finding an internal software program that is compatible with the other document management tools on your desktop. You'll need to be well-versed on the details of your fax/modem card, your PC's operating system and a variety of compatibility issues.
